How to Prevent Foundation Damage During a Drought
Droughts can have severe impacts on homes! This could lead to very costly repairs due to shifting soil which can cause your foundation to crack. There are steps that you can take to prevent this from happening. One such measure is “watering” your foundation. If you have big trees they will draw moisture from underneath your home.
Cracks in the ground are a tip that you need to water the foundation more. There is no strict rule of thumb on how much you should water your foundation. You can water the ground near the foundation 20 seconds for every five feet by hand on full blast or when you notice the cracks in the ground disappearing. Do this every other day. Most municipalities allow for hand watering which this would fall into that category. Another solution is using a soaker hose placed a foot along the perimeter of the foundation on a timer.
The reason so many foundations are having issues lies with the type of soil they are built on. If your home is on expansive clay, then you need to watch this very closely.
